vanilla extract is one of those things that people don’t realize how easy it is to make at home. and given how expensive it is at the store, especially if you want the good quality stuff, it’s a shame that more people don’t know. so listen up, people! vanilla extract is super easy to make at home! you’ll never spend $13 on a tiny little bottle of it again!
the process is so simple i feel silly typing it out below in recipe format – you put some vanilla beans in alcohol, and let it sit for about six weeks. that’s it. seriously. i usually order a bunch of vanilla beans online (here, for example) and make a lot of extract all at once, and then i have it to bake into everything i can dream up for a reeeaaaallllly long time. it’s just so easy. i really can’t recommend it enough. please – for me – give it a try!

- chop the vanilla beans into 1-inch pieces. put them with the vodka into a sealed jar.
- let the jar sit in a cool place for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking it every few days.
